Purge Your Brain - 6/4/2008
Have you ever heard yourself say, “I’m spilling” or “I’m up to here” or “I can’t take anymore.” Sure you have – and so has everyone else.
Have you ever overloaded to the point that you wore yourself down emotionally, felt you had no room to put anymore in and wanted to select flight instead of fight? Of course you have!
Did you ever get headaches from the seemingly endless lists of things to remember in order to be successful? Haven’t we all. But how can that be when scientific studies all say that we only use a fraction of our brain capacity – how then can we overload so easily?
It sometimes seems that all the procedures, action steps, protocols, techniques, ideas, rules, habits, strategies, success acronyms and buzzwords piles up and you become frazzled and even paralyzed, not knowing what to do. And, I promise that booze or drugs are not the answer.
People run out of mental storage room for one of a few reasons. First, it is the way in which YOU view your own capacity. Instead of “I can’t take it anymore, try the attitude that I and so many of our successful members have adopted, “Lay it on me, I can handle it all.”
Secondly, overload comes from the erroneous belief that more is better, that if you only added one more new idea or one more action step it would all come together and the stress would disappear -- which of course is not a valid belief.
Instead, what about purging your brain from once valid beliefs and practices that have outlived their usefulness and applicability? What about taking some tine to examine some of the misinformation or misconceptions that you’ve accepted as valid or true, but are not – and then purging them to make room.
For instance, many chiropractors still believe that if you lower your fee you will attract more new patients, they in turn will refer more, stay longer, comply with your instructions, be more timely and bring flowers to the CA’s. A belief system such as that takes up as much room as a belief that says that patients are willing to pay a fair fee for a first-class outstanding service and that by changing your attitude you can attract patients that are willing to stay, pay and refer regularly.
Excess mental baggage wears you down and piles up, not only affecting you, but negatively impacting your family, the people you work with and most importantly, it negatively affects the results you get.
We act on what we believe is true, whether it is true or not. Whatever we accept and believe determines how well what we do works, because what we believe determines how we behave – and how we behave determines what we achieve or don’t achieve.
Regardless of all the affirmations, goal setting and visualizations you attempt to do so diligently and regardless of all your good intentions, we are all susceptible to the Mother, Father, Teacher, Preacher flawed thinking that eventually accumulates and leads to overload.
I’m saying dump this data from your memory banks and purge your brain. Forgive any past mistakes; forgive any petty or hard-line grievances that have been festering against others; clean up your outside physical environment and free up some space for better, more positive and more productive alternative behaviors and actions.
Decide – right now – to walk away from anything, and I mean anything that does not serve you, nurture your or make you happy. Deliberately ACT AS IF you are not filled up, accept that you are responsible for creating the burdens you now carry (a very difficult thing to do), put a smile on your face and make a decision to be free. Be Abraham Lincoln and free the brain slaves that chain you to mediocrity or unhappiness.
Like you purge your computer now and then to get rid of the old and make room for the new, do the same for your own personal built in computer. Purge your brain, focus on what you want and not what you don’t want, work on changing any ideas, actions, thoughts or beliefs that have proven to be counter-productive to your goals for success and happiness.
In short, clean it up -- free it up – and move up!
