Media Fast - 7/26/2009

A few months back when chiropractic patient advocate Bill Esteb introduced the concept of going on a Media Fast to the participants of an Expressions gathering, I thought it was a fabulous idea.

Actually, he was just affirming for me what I had come to believe by myself. Without even realizing it, until Bill pointed it out, I have already been on a self-imposed Media Fast – for the past four years. I took this important action step of restricting the constant barrage of negative information that was inundating my brain on a daily basis – because it was in direct conflict with what I was attempting to do.

My goal was to live from the inside – out and not the outside – in.  I decided not to give anyone or anything on the outside permission to get a piece of my mind by repeatedly pounding away with negative news until it influenced me and became a part of my thinking.

Here I was, travelling all over the place, telling audiences everywhere to change their minds, to do positive affirmations on a daily basis, to write goals of what they wanted to achieve (at anytime in any economy), to visualize the full experience of their victories and to meditate regularly to engage the power of the right brain of creation – and that was incongruent with my own actions.

The talking heads that yak away on newscasts beat you into submission until you eventually cave in – and worse yet, begin to believe that what they say is actually true.  Careful here - before you panic and start to sweat, you should be aware of what is going on in the world - but without all the sordid details.

I am not telling you to stop the input of negative news to dumb you down.  I am telling you to do this because it has no value to the “reprogramming of your mind” and to the value systems that create success.

For example, how many hours did the media devote to the recent death of Michael Jackson?  Too many to count, I’m sure you would agree.  And yes, he was a musical genius, but also strange and weird and mentally deranged to say the least. Do you really want that “stuff” in your head?

And how many of you watch a very popular TV program called, “The Biggest Loser?”  Great title, huh?  Yes, if you already are or want to become a loser.

Bill said, and I am saying now, “Give it up!”  No news first thing in the morning, no 5 o’clock and 6 o’clock local and then national news, no news at night just before you go to bed.  It’s like programming your mind to fail.

So, starting RIGHT NOW – eliminate all the junk that you read, or listen to or watch on TV.  Go cold turkey – gut out the withdrawal.  Replace this terribly negative and emotionally disturbing habit by reading a book, listening to self-help CD’s, watching the History or Discovery channel or working on your goals.

Going on a Media Fast will go a long way in changing the way you think and it will create a time and mental space vacuum for you to fill in all the inputs that are creative and beneficial to your new journey.

Say goodbye to negative and repetitive news! Say hello to affirmative statements and positive input!
