Turn On Your Built-In GPS - 9/13/2009
Every year, for as long as I can remember, whether in person and in front of large audiences or via the written word, I have sounded the trumpet and shouted from the mountain tops that the time to set next year’s goals is BEFORE October 1st – which means RIGHT NOW – in the next few weeks!!
To me this critical action step is essential for those who have truly decided that they want to control their minds so they can indeed create their own futures – the ones they select (inside-out) and not the ones that are haphazardly happen to them (outside-in).
I know – it all sounds so trite, so unimportant, so time wasting. Yes, perhaps it does – for those who have no faith or understanding in how the human mind works to actually create whatever thoughts you have allowed to dominate your thinking – whether expressed or not and whether you are even aware of them or not.
The fact is that who you are and what you have attracted into your life up to this point, in large part, has been created by you. And, to change what you have you must reprogram your mind and point it at the targets you want to hit.
Your mind possesses its own built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) and it works exactly like the one you have in your car or your handheld devices. The internal mission of any GPS system is to guide you from where you are now to where you want to go – from Point A (your current position) to Point B (your destination).
Amazing as it sounds your mind works exactly the same way, BUT they both need to be programmed! With GPS technology you punch in your present location and program your destination AFTER WHICH the built-in guidance system lays out the correct path for you – the one that most assuredly will end up taking you where you want to go.
With your mind YOU still have to program it – and you do so by telling it (1) exactly what you want (2) the date certain that you expect to receive what you want (3) the action steps you plan to use (the pathways) to get you there and (4) how the attainment of this goal will benefit you and make you feel.
And, GOALS MUST BE WRITTEN DOWN or they are not goals, merely wish lists like the ones children write before Christmas. Just thinking you have goals doesn’t work because you never think of them in the exact same way. Therefore your mind isn’t able to get a clear picture of what you want and cannot develop the right path for you. It requires exact and repetitive orders for 90 days for your mind have clarity that your goal is what you want it to create for you.
To make this crystal clear, I suggest goals be written in categories. I start off with writing my overall Purpose Statement - what I want to create. This action creates the overall map that will act as my personal GPS. Then I write goals in the following categories: Personal Goals (improvements you want to make) Professional Goals (occupational desires), Prosperity Goals (about earning and saving money) People Goals (relationships) and Play Goals (toys and trinkets you want to have).
So, what I am asking you to do – RIGHT NOW – is to find some time to be by yourself and “Turn on Your Built-In GPS.” Write out your 2010 goals and be as specific and diligent as you can be.
Also know that if, for whatever reason, you do not write out your goals you are giving up your right to complain about what happens to you in life. You must then accept your role as someone who is not really desirous of improving themselves and their lot in life and accept whatever happens with grace and style.
Or you can write out your goals and create a brighter and more fulfilling future for yourself. Once again the choice is yours. I choose to create my own destiny!
